Tolls in Italy/Switzerland/France

We are renting a car for our upcoming trip to Italy, Switzerland and France, from Avis. Do the rental cars come with a transponder to accumulate the toll charges, so we can avoid having to pay individual tolls as we drive across Europe? Is there a separate charge for the Toll Transponder or are we simply charged for the tolls, itself?

Switzerland uses a vignette windshield sticker which you buy entering the country, either at the border customs station or a gas station near the border. Cost is 40 CHF.

I hope you are returning the car to the country where you picked it up, otherwise a very expensive international drop fee.

Just guessing, based on the way things seem to work, each country does it's own thing. The sticker for Switzerland was mentioned, you might want to look at your itinerary and the cities you will be going through, a "green" sticker to either verify that the vehicle meets air quality, or pays for the privilege. More of an issue in France and Germany, but may have spread to other countries.

Also verify you are able to take the car into each country, you may need additional insurance for Italy, or they may restrict you all together.

hey hey angela.lurie
check AAA.com/IDP
look at countries you are going thru to see if they require a international driver's permit. things have changed within these few years.
this subject has been brought up so many times here on the forum.
some people were asked at car rental desk, if didn't have when asked reservation denied and others weren't asked. if stopped by police for whatever reason they want to see it in their country, if didn't sometimes car was towed away or a big fine $$$ or both in euros. not worth the headache to think should i or shouldn't i. get it. it's $20, 2 passport size photos for each driver, receive same day and good for a year.
as sam and paul mention about traveling between countries, carry "money" of each country in small bills to pay tolls or make sure your credit card works. read up about each country and the laws/rules of their land, traffic signs, do's & dont's, restriction areas. check how much it would cost to pick up one country and return to another, your decision which calls for "deep pockets"
whatever you do, have a great trip

In Italy tolls can be paid through a transponder called Telepass, but I’m not sure the rental car company will provide one. I doubt they do and certainly only if you rent the car in Italy since Telepass requires a monthly subscription cost and an IBAN (International Bank Number where all the charges are debited). I wouldn’t want it even if they provide one, because it is certain that the rental car company would charge you a rental fee even if you don’t use it. I’d pay at the gate with either cash or card. That’s what I do in Italy.

Rental cars in France do not come with transponders. You do not need one, toll booths have plenty of credit card and cash lanes. There is just one exception in the center of the country (A79) that you are extremely unlikely to come across.

given the countries you have initially listed it is possible that you may dip into or through Austria - you really don't give your itinerary so I can't tell what the chances are. In any event, if you do drive at all in Austria on a motorway you will also need an Austrian Vignette.

For the environmental questions it is key to know which country you are acquiring the car.

For Italy, are you aware of ZTLs (well covered on these forums, especially the Italy forum, usually as a result of a person accumulating hundreds of Euros worth of fines and then complaining) and speed averaging cameras, and all the other fines you can get?

If you are going from France to Switzerland - or the other way - there is a pretty good chance you will be in Germany for part - again, it would be helpful to have a look at your itinerary.

And, no transponder.
