Tolls between Tuscany and FCO

Are E35, A90 and A91 toll roads? Do they have pay by plate?
Are there more scenic alternatives without getting too far afield? Flight is 6 PM so we do have some time.

The E35 is - don't believe either of the others is a toll road.
If you're looking for a scenic route consider the SR222 between Siena and Florence - cuts thru the heart of Chianti and features a number of cute little towns for lunch or just a stretch of the legs. We just did it ourselves last month and enjoyed it immemsely. You won't make good time but you won't care.
A possible detour along the way is the Florence American WWII Cemetery. Beautiful place and very moving too.

The A90 is Rome's ring road (better known as the GRA) and it's free; the same holds true for the A91 the goes from FCO to downtown.

Being italian I've never wasted my time learning the stupid E-something numbering system made up by EU bureaucrats in the late 90s. If you could post the the real name of that road I could tell you if it's tolled or not. As a side note, It's not just me: Nobody in Italy uses that system and most signs won't say anything about E35.

On viamichelin.com there is an option to calculate tolls and gas costs. You can also check an "avoid tolls" option.

There's a very scenic option that takes you thru the Val d'Orica. It's called the SR2. It parallels the A1/E35. As you get closer to Rome it changes to the SR2bis. To reach the airport, you take the A90 which takes you to the A91. The drive will take 3-3.75 hours without stops.

You'll be headed toward Lake Bolsena and Viterbo exiting the Val d'Orcia.

Edit: toll on this route is under €5

E 35 is. We paid by credit card when returning to FCO. I can't remember how much, maybe 15 euro.

Where will you be coming from? What time will you be leaving?

We are coming from Stazione Ferroviaria.
Google Maps calls E35 as A1-Autostrada del Sole.

Fritzy,

The A1/E35 Autostrada del Sole is just the designation of the oldest highway in Europe. The longest in Italy.

Which city/town will you be coming from?

Believe me, nobody knows what the E35 is in Italy: Try to ask a local where is the closest entrance to the E35! Most important is that you won't see those codes on the smaller green signs in the countryside, when you really need to find the closest entry to the motorway network.
Another reason to use viamichelin when planning journeys between cities is that Google used a Ferrari driven by a 20-something male to calculate the driving times.

Stazione ferroviaria means Railway Station, which station are you coming from? Bigger cities have many stations.

Out of curiosity, do you know what ZTL areas and the Tutor System are?

The A1/E35 Autostrada del Sole is just the designation of the oldest highway in Europe.

The first motorway ever built is the Milano-Varese (1924) if you are Italian. The rest of the world thinks that the first motorway has been built by the Germans in 1932 between Köln and Bonn. By modern standards the rest of the world is right.

The A1 (aka Autosole) is a symbol of post WW2 reconstruction. It's famous because of the Moma photographic exhibition and because the Germans argued that building such a road through crumbling mountains without their help would have been impossible.

Hi Dario, the closest city/town near to where we would get on E35 is Bettolle. So what do the Italians call E35?

I have read about ZTLs. The only place I think I have to be wary of them is leaving Florence, where we pick up our car. But I do not know about the Tutor System. Can you explain?

I'll look up the viamichelin guide and the Moma photographic exhibition.

I am of Italian heritage so I'll keep the info about the Milano-Varese motorway in the back of my mind for next time I hear about the Autobahn.

Thanks for all your input!

A1, as written on the street sign I linked.

The tutor system is made of 2 cameras that calculate the average speed of each car between 2 points.

You'll see many Idiots going faster than the limit posted on signs, the reason is that they are going to exit the network before the second camera. So cops have started installing old fashioned speed traps even on motorway sections "covered" by the tutor. Idiots will be idiots.

There is alway a sign before speed traps: http://1.citynews-firenzetoday.stgy.ovh/~media/original-hi/63443036803367/tutor-2-2-2.jpg and https://www.laleggepertutti.it/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/cartello-avviso-autovelox.jpg

There is a ZTL in every italian settlement, not only in Florence and same size cities. Venice may be the only exception.

The Milano-Varese is to a modern motorway What a wolf is to a chihuahua... according to modern standards the Germans are right, they built the first motorway in the world. Eight years later the italian Prototype.

We lived in Germany in the late 80s/early 90s and visited Italy more than once by car. The tolls on the Autostrata were huge back then. I think we spent more on tolls than on fuel.

We later took the train from Germany to Rome that cost less than the tolls and gas.
