We just returned from this year's adventure in Italy. We drove everywhere.
Coming out of Pompeii, heading "north" on the A1, we had issues with the toll booth. It is an area where you pay X to enter the Autostrada. The machine would not take our money. We pushed the button and the door would not open. The gate went up but the light stayed red. We tried twice more to get the door open and finally drove through. We know we will probably be getting a ticket in a couple of years.
So it is possible to miss a toll!!!
