We will be traveling in tuscany from florence, south to Val d' orca, East to Montepulciano and West to Lucca. Is A1 the only tollroad in Tuscany?

For now (but probably not for long) the motorway between Florence and Siena is free, as it is the standard motorway between Florence and Pisa/Livorno. Florence to Lucca and Viareggio and A1 north to south are toll roads.

Confusingly, some of the Autostrade now have an additional designation beginning with E, as in E80. Apparently to create Europe-wide route numbers. In Italy, green road signs or the word 'peddaggio' mean a toll road.

Mike, the E-numbering of roads is nothing new, they have existed for as long as I have been driving round Europe. E road numbers are pan European and exist as well as the national numbers. In some countries they post the national number AND the E-number, in other countries just the national number.
The E-numbers are also shown on maps.

The A1 (Milano-Napoli) is a toll road. It passes through Tuscany from the Apennines pass near Barberino, then goes through Florence, the Valdarno Superiore (Upper Arno Valley), Arezzo, Valdichiana, and from there it proceeds south.
The A11 Firenze-Mare (Florence to Sea) is toll. It goes from Florence to Lucca and Viareggio.
The A12 Livorno-Genova is toll.
All others are free.
Based on you itinerary, you will likely take the A1 from near Montepulciano (Valdichiana entrance) then travel to Florence (Firenze) Nord where you will enter the A11 to Lucca.
Pick up the ticket at the booth at the entrance ramp, then give the ticket to to booth attendant when you exit in Lucca. The display will show how much you owe.
Italian autostrade toll payment system works exactly the same as a parking lot: pick up the ticket when you enter, give the ticket to the booth attendant and pay when you exit. No need to throw exact coins in a basket every so many miles like in some turnpikes in America.

If planning a route with www.viamichelin.com, it will estimate the tolls to pay on any given route and also recommend routes without tolls. (But they also should not be hard to avoid with the road number info already provided.)

And remember to have cash for the toll booths.

You are right Chris, but the new aspect in Italy is that some signs on the autostrada and some directional signs leading to the autostrade have ONLY the E route number. Needlessly confusing, imo.
