Toilets on regional trains - Siena - Florence - Pisa?

Can anyone give me information on whether or not there are toilets on regional trains in Tuscany? We will be staying in Siena and making side trips to Florence and Pisa. My wife always likes to make sure the trains have toilets "just in case", even though she almost never uses them.

Yes all train cars of any type of train have restrooms. If one is occupied just try the next car.

But in your place I would take advantage of the situation and pull your wife's leg and tell her she'll have to stick her fanny out in the wind from a window. Then see how she reacts and see if she starts packing some diapers. I never miss a chance to get a good laugh at my wife's expense.

I highly recommend your wife brings toilet seat covers and toilet paper, or tissues, plus sanitary hand wipes with her if she plans to use the toilets on the trains. In my experience, I'd rather hold it than use the head. The last few train toilet experiences, the trains didn't have toilet seats, and or toilet paper. Floors were soaking wet. Not a pleasant experience. Just saying.....

torry,

The WC facilities on Regionale trains are usually somewhat "basic" and as I recall they empty right onto the track. They also have varying degrees of cleanliness, so your wife may or may not be comfortable using them.

The trip from Siena to Florence is best done by Bus, and if using the Corse Rapide buses the trip is only about an hour each way so she may not need a WC for that short time. You may find it helpful to have a look at THIS website which describes the transportation options in Siena.

If using Regionale trains, you MUST validate your ticket prior to boarding the train on the day of travel, or risk hefty fines which will be collected on the spot! The same is usually true with Buses also.

Remember not to use the toilets while the train is in the station. There are signs posted but I don't recall whether they are in English/other languages or only in Italian.

RS recommends carrying those Dove face wipes. They are dry, are very compact and light, pack and carry easy, luggage stays dry, and wipes can be used dry.

Yes, some toilets have No seat. Be prepared on how to manage this.

Yes, all train cars of any type have toilet facilities. If the one on the train is in bad shape, then the one in the small-town train station could be worse (some station lavs in Cinque Terre have bad reps).

I'm just waiting for a British person to read Roberto's comment that she'll have to stick her fanny out the window. That means something different there. :-)

Thanks all. By the sounds of it, we are looking at the same situation as we experienced on the Transilien trains in the Paris area. It's there if it's an emergency, but you really want to avoid it if you can. My wife just needs the piece of mind.

I was just curious because some of the trains leaving Siena (on videos I've seen) look like they are only 2 or 3 cars long, so I got a bit concerned.

Since going to Pisa requires a train change in Empoli, one can always use the station's restrooms if the movement of the train negatively impacts your aim.
Even the Minuetto train (the smallest in service in some regional lines) has bathrooms.
