Toilets on long distance buses

This is an awkward question but I need to know so I need to ask.

Do long distance buses such as we might take btwn Siena and Rome typically have a toilet on board?

Generally yes, but not always.

Tom,
No question is too awkward. That is the same question I asked a couple of years ago about travel by bus in Croatia. When I asked the question on another forum site, a local told me that the buses have one, but they don't want you to use it as they generally don't have time to empty it! Sometimes I miss the most scenic route because I will take a train instead. Maybe you could find out the correct info if you check out the bus line's site?

Maybe my answer was a little too short. Unfortunately there is not a 100% answer for your question. My experience is that nearly all long haul bus have WCs. But sometimes they are out of order. And, as Diane stated, many times they discourage the usage except in an emergency. Whatever that might be. In other words, if a restroom is critical because of a medical issue, then a train is a better option.

In December I took a bus from Porto San Giorgio in Le Marche to Napoli and that bus did have a toilet on board.

Only it was under the floorboards. It was located in the middle of the bus, I had to lift a large cover, and then descend into a hole. I guess I would then put the cover back in place.

One of the drivers showed all this to me while we were still at PSG. I asked about a toilet on board right away because I saw none when I looked around.

Anyway, I said to the driver, I'm Not going down there!!! He calmly put the cover down and walked back to the front.

And halfway to Napoli the bus got off the highway and stopped at a beautiful rest stop. The entire bus emptied as all of us ran to the toilets! Only enough time to use the toilets, the drivers said, No time to stop and eat.

When you go to the bus company office to buy your ticket, ask about toilets on board. May your trip be as pleasant and sweet as mine was.

Even on private buses, nobody uses the on board toilet. Usually a rest stop can always be arranged.

Good answers, everyone. Thanks. I'll think it all through carefully before hand.
