I don't think Tivoli deserves two full nights but it's up to you.
You can get to Tivoli easily on your own if you don't want to take an organized tour. There are buses from Rome (also a slow train).

It is really just a day trip from Rome - no more. Go to RoninRome.com for a very detailed, step-by-step, including pictures on how to use public transit getting to and from. It is easy and cheap way to go.

Hi Annette, You will enjoy a day trip to Tivoli. It is easily done in a day. We took the metro to a stop that has something about a bridge in the name Sorry I can't remember the exact name. At that stop you go outside and there are many bus stops. You find Tivoli. I believe we bought the ticket on the bus. It takes about an hour on the bus. We were the only non locals on the bus. We asked if it went to Tivoli. No one spoke English, but they knew what we meant and said yes. There were several nuns. When we approached the right stop, they all signaled that this was our stop and gave us directions by pointing and explaining in Italian where to head from the bus. They were very helpful. You catch the bus back across the street from where you get off. It was an express back, so it took a faster route, but we ended up in the same spot where we started. I was easy and fun. I believe these instructions are in Rick's book. The gardens are being restored. I had seen them 40 years ago. The fountains are not in as good shape as they were back then, but it was a very enjoyable day. We ate in the village before we went back to Rome. It was worth a day but no more. I mostly wanted my wife to see what I had seen all those years ago.
Have fun.
