To those who are headed to Rome soon

We just left Rome after a four day stay and it was extremely hot--plan to take a few summer type clothes if you are going soon--my clothes were way too heavy. We usually take our spring trip each May and this is the hottest weather yet. We are in Tuscany now and it is cooler--at least nights are cool.

As Susan's post shows, even someone from Atlanta found Rome hot in May. Travelers should expect it to be even hotter in the summer months: Rome heat is a different kind of heat than most of us are used to, saps your energy, especially if you're affected by jet lag. If you're going in the coming summer months, have sleeping accommodations with AC, be prepared for hot tiring weather, and drink enough water (but then make sure you don't pass up a clean bathroom).

Susan, I check the weather in several cities every day, and I noticed that Rome is experiencing a bit of a "heat wave" at the moment.

The weather this week (May 18) is expected to be sunny and 28 - 29 C for the whole week! Summer clothes would definitely be a good idea!

Hi Susan (great name!),

Helpful post! We are heading there this week and have been going back and forth on what to pack. We are doing carry-on only (wish me luck!) so I'm being so picky when it comes to what I'm bringing.

The weather reports are one thing, but it is helpful to have a first hand report (especially since we lived in Atlanta for a couple of years -- so if you say it is hot, it is HOT!).

Thank you for letting us know! I'm headed there next week. While looking at the weather report helps, first hand experience of current times is definately great information!

One thing to keep in mind - just because it is hot right now doesn't mean it will continue to be so. My first trip to Europe was in July & August 2006. At the beginning of the trip we were to meet up with family in Germany (Black Forest). I heard from my brothers who were already there how hot it was, and don't bother to pack a jacket. When we arrived it was miserably hot...for the first part of the trip. About 10 days into the trip the weather changed and it became cool and rainy. I ended up having to buy a sweater in Amsterdam. Not that I minded... :) My point is that even if you expect extreme heat it is good to have a sweater or something else to keep you warm if you need it.

Yes, very true the weather can change. Our challenge with clothes is we are headed to Switzerland for our third week here. The Tuscan nights have been delightfully cool but days warm. For Rome light weight skirts and short sleeves and even sleeveless is ideal.

As Andrea pointed out, you have to be prepared for a range of weather. Just because it is hot in Rome today it may not be tomorrow. Our first visit to Rome was three years ago during the first week of June. And everybody said Rome is hot -- just a question of hot or hotter. We adjusted by leaving behind the long sleeve shirt and light sweater. Big mistake. The first week of June was so cold that for two nights the sidewalk cafes did not open. We were wearing two ss shirts and the rain jacket trying to stay warm. Of course, when we returned the following year at the same time we had no need for the sweaters we carefully packed. We are sticking to our plan of always packing for a wide range of temperatures and conditions regardless of what anyone or everyone says.
