To the South

I'm looking at heading down south for a 3-4 day break from Rome. Anyone have any suggestions as to where I should go? (I've been through Sicily, so I'm not looking to returning there) Grazie mille!

Naples area: Napoli, Pompeii, Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, Capri. A favorite of the Rick Steves' people. Ponziane Islands: Ponza and Ventotene. Like the Greek islands but much closer to Rome (2 hrs including sea crossing). Very relaxing. Apulia (Puglia): Great for see, sea and seafood (Salento area is nice) Gargano Peninsula and Tremiti islands (also in Apulia): like the Cinque Terre but without the pesky Rick Steves' people. If you like high mountains, head to Abruzzo. Do some searches on line. The Abruzzo National park is one of the best in Europe.

Hey Kristen -
I'll be heading to Naples myself the end of May, posted a travel question and have received some good advice. Sorrento as a home base is what seems to be highly regarded and taking trips from there to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples, Positano, etc. is what I'm planning. I also only have 3-4 days before I need to head to Tuscany. Buon Viaggio! Carla

Paestum has great Greek temples, a good small museum, a beach, and mozzarella farms nearby. Roberto's suggestion for islands is great.

Kristen, As Roberto mentioned, the Gargano peninsula would be a good choice (have a look at website for Vieste). You could also visit Alberobello or Matera. There are LOTS of good choices! Happy travels!
