To stay or not to stay - Salerno

I am planning a trip to Italy this June. For the first week, we are renting a villa in Tuscany and my plan for the second week is to bum around the Amalfi Coast (on a budget). I am curious if it's plausible to stay in Salerno and day trip up and down the coast. Cheaper? Not worth it? We'll be taking the train down from Rome and from what I can tell, there is a line that does directly into Salerno. Thanks all!

Debbie, I have read a few very positive posts recently about Salerno (i'll see if I can dig one up). Although I am staying in Positano for the first time this summer, I am thinking of going to a language school in Salerno in the next couple of years. Salerno has great public transportation options, including good ferry connections, the SITA bus and trains. Much better priced accommodations, especially if you are looking to rent an apartment or house for a week. Also much easier to see Paestum and some buffalo mozzarella farms! I would do it in a heartbeat!

EKC! Thank you, thank you for the quick response! And a positive one to boot. I appreciate the links as well. Cheers!

No problem Debbie! If you are going in late June, you may be able to catch one of the three saints' days festivals (most of which are very near Salerno, with Amalfi being the furthest): June 24 - Vietri Sul Mare June 27 - Amalfi
June 29 - Cetara
