To Rome or not to Rome

My husband and I are planning on being in Rome from 5/24 to 5/27 (coming via train from CT on 5/24), flying to Athens from Rome on 5/27, returning to Rome on 6/1, and flying to JFK from Rome on 6/3 morning. Would you recommend that we stay near the airport or go back to the city? Are there any cities near the airport that would be nice to stay in for a day and a half - I'm actually thinking that we will only have one full day as we won't get back till late on 6/1 and we'll be leaving early on 6/3 out of Rome. Any hotel/b&b recs? Thanks!

I agree - go back to the city. You can stay near Termini - it's easy to get back to the airport. Rome is just too much fun to wander one more day. We did 4 days in Rome, then Sorrento, then back for a few days. Rome felt so comfortable the second time around - we love just roaming around.

If you haven't booked your tickets, you should consider returning home from Athens so that you do not have to back track to Rome and it would, most likely, save you a couple bucks.

I like Frank's advice, but assuming that you have to go back to FCO for your flight...

Yep. Rome! Even if you have a flight that requires you to get to the airport earlier than the train runs, stay in the city and arrange a taxi or shuttle.
