From Florence, most people seem to take the train to Poggibonsi and then transfer to a bus to San Gimignano. The Discover Tuscany website recommends taking a bus to Poggibonsi for a couple reasons, including better timed connections. I'd like to minimize time/confusion in getting to S. Gimignano from Florence (day trip). Any opinions on whether bus+bus is better than train+bus? Or maybe it makes no difference.
This is the first I've heard of the Florence-Poggibonsi train being a "popular" option. Rick's guidebooks only suggest the bus for San Gimignano "hourly, less on Sundays, 1.5-2 hours, change in Poggibonsi."
Bus is probably faster since it's more direct. That railway has to swing around the hills from Empoli. But it's up to you. It's not much different
Thank you both! I found another piece of info which makes the bus sound better. Evidently there is a close connection between the bus from Firenze and the different bus leaving Poggibonsi for S. Gim., making the wait for the 2nd bus only 10 minutes vs. having to much wait longer for the bus after arriving on the train. I don't know the reason for this but I trust the source of the info. Thanks again!
