To/From Ortisei

Arranging our travel via public transportation. Looks like getting there from Venice I'd have a choice of transferring from the train to the 350 bus at Bolzano (1 bus/hour about 60 minutes) or Ponte Gardena (which shows 2 buses/hr and about 30 minutes less bus time). But, Bolzano seems to be mentioned much more frequently in my reading and various internet sources - Would there be a reason for that?

Same thing on the return going to Milan Airport, although here there is an interesting possibility of a Flixbus direct to the airport from Bolzano Sud. Don't know that I want to chance 2 transfers before I can get the only departure of the day tho. Are there any car services that would take us direct Ortisei - Bolzano Sud? Would a taxi do that? If so any specific recommendations? I figure it'll cost but thats ok if it looks good.

Just guessing, but Bolzano is a stop for the express trains. I doubt Ponte Gardena is though.

So if you're coming from far away, it's likely faster to take an express train to Bolzano and then the bus to Ortesei from there, as opposed to a slower train or changing trains to Ponte Gardena for a little shorter us ride.

Don't know this for a fact, but seems likely why guidebooks tell you "take bus from Bolzano."

Italian fast trains end/start their run at Bolzano. North of Bolzano there are only regional train services or the international services to Austria and Germany run by OeBB and DB.

The 350 bus originates in Bolzano so you will have a better choice of seats. Exit the train station, turn right...the bus station is a 3 minute walk max. You get your ticket there.

Use taxi-ivan.com. Recommended by forum poster Laurel Barton, who wrote the helpful book Walking in Italy's Val Gardena. We used Ivan from Bolzano to Ortisei and vice versa. He will pick up and drop off wherever you need.

Thanks for info, makes sense then. Booking made to Bolzano. Will check out taxi-ivan on outbound possibilities.

We just returned yesterday from Ortisei and enjoyed every minute. We took the train to Bolzano NOT Bolzano SUD and then walked to the bus station which is adjacent to the train station. Bus 350 gets you to Ortisei in one hour and you can easily put your suitcases in the compartment at the bus’s base.

We stayed at Hotel Garni August and loved it but it is up a hill with local bus that runs hourly or taxi there for 13 euro. Any questions just pm me. Can’t wait to go back!
