Tivoli/Hadrian's Villa: take a tour or go my own way?

Ok, so I want to do a half day trip out to Tivoli and Hadrian's Villa. I will be on a slight budget and I'm sure the metro/bus combo out that way is cost effective. I'm just still confused about the exact way to get to Hadrian's Villa from Tivoli. I've read roninrome for detailed directions to Tivoli, but the directions to Hadrian's Villa is still a bit confusing. Any help? I'm not afraid of venturing on my own and am pretty good at knowing my way around, just as long as I have the proper directions.

I also wonder, how much time it will take to see both sites if I decided to do this without a tour. Or is it better to pay the roughly $80 to go with a bus tour? The only problem I see with that is the tour only lasts 4 hours (I'm assuming that includes transportation time?). Any advice will help.

We visited Tivoli last October and Ron's directions were perfect. Tivoli is massive and we spent most of the day there. Between transportation out and back -- about an hour each way -- I don't think you can see both in a half day. It would be hard to see Tivoli in a half day.

I forgot to mention that I completely understand the directions to Tivoli. No problem there.

We had a guide for our tour of Hadrian's Villa (not someone I would recommend) and could easily have wandered around on our own. I would say allow three hours for wandering around the villa.

The bus to Tivoli takes you pass the bus stop for Hadrian's Villa. I think it was about two stops prior to Tivoli. Ask the bus driver for the stop. Another option would be for a taxi from Tivoli to Hadrian's villa once you were through with Tivoli. That was our plan until we spent too much time at Tivoli. Save it for the next trip.
