Tivoli

Greetings! Rick's Italy and/or Rome guidebook does not mention the ruins of Villa d'Este and Villa Adriana near Tivoli as a possibility of visiting either as a stand alone destination or as a Rome side trip. If anyone has visited these sights we would very much appreciate your thoughts. In advance many thanks for you kind reply!!

We visited the two sites as a day trip from Rome, and I think it was a very worthwhile use of our time. However, that's a judgement from one who had been to Rome several other times and had seen a great deal of the city. Villa d'Este isn't ruin; it's quite intact, and its gardens are lovely. Villa Adriana is an archaeological site, with parts in various stages of restoration. Our visit was several years ago, so it's probably progressed since then.
We had a car, and I'm remembering the drive took about an hour. I don't recall any special difficulty with parking. I believe you can also get there by bus.
