I would like some suggestions on going to Tivoli from Rome. I find the guided tours expensive for a 4 hour tour. This includes transportation time. Thanks.

Go on a weekday! We've been, by bus, twice. Last summer was on a Saturday. Jammed at the station, no queue, standing room only on the bus all the way. It was a memorable trip and I enjoyed it, but we were packed tight (I mean, touching the persons next to you head to toe)!

Yes, it's easy to do on your own, and far better and cheaper. Ron in Rome explains it all, and so does Rick Steves. You also have the option of going to Tivoli by train both ways. Check the Trenitalia.com website for details.
