Tirano/Varenna

Has anyone found a train timetable for travel between Tirano and Varenna? Departure times and how long it takes? Have tried several websites to no avail. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

There are two ways to see this. One is to look on Trenitalia for the train from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino. That train continues on to Tirano after stopping at Varenna. The departure time would be about one minute after the arrival time. It takes about 1.5 hours from there to Tirano. You can see the whole route on the Swiss railmsite, rail.ch. Put in a route from Milano Centrale to Tirano. Pick one train, open the details with the little arrow on the left, and then hit " show intermediate stops.". You'll see Varenna there. I would check both as a cross-check.

Mike, Your best source for information on that route at the moment is to use the www.sbb.ch website. The Trenitalia website is undergoing "a complete overhaul" at the moment, and that route seems to have been overlooked. There should be departures about every two hours on the "odd" hour (ie: 09:10, 11:10, 13:10, etc.). The trip is 1H:31M, with no changes. Happy travels!

Interestingly, Tirano is in Italy on the border with Switzerland. Trenitalia will not show the run from Tirano to Varenna-Esino but the Swiss will at www.rail.ch. Even more interesting is that the Italians won't sell you a ticket online for this train as it is a Regionale train. However, the Swiss will sell you a ticket online for 8CHF. The train journey takes about 90 minutes. In actuality, you don't need to buy any tickets in advance. Regionale trains are similar to buses. You buy your ticket, validate it at the little yellow machine in the train station, get on and find your own seat. No seat reservations permitted. If no seats, you can stand. Trains don't often run full. You won't miss the train. Here's a link to what I see. http://gyazo.com/bd508ef50bb862c9d6f148d0d404f6bd

The problem with buying tickets from Varenna to Tirano is that the staion is unmanned and there is no ticket machine. So if you don't buy online ( which I would not do for a regional train), you must stop by the travel agent for tickets on your way to the station. Make sure you do this during their open hours. N.b. The SBB.ch website and rail.ch that I mentioned are the same website. Rail.ch takes you straight to English.
