Tirano to Chur on Rhaetian Railway

Hello: I have decided to take the red train and not the Bernina Express.

I'm looking for any tips about taking the red regional train from Tirano to Chur on May 2. Looks to be a holiday week-end so likely very busy. I understand there is usually no need to pre-book. But, would reserving be wise? Is it even possible? Is that done on-line? Would I want to do that? I'm really in the dark. Also, I don't understand how often this train runs. I have read what appears to be inconsistent information about how often it runs.

Also is there any problem ending at Chur vs. St Moritz? I'd greatly appreciate information most especially from the past couple of years if anyone has done this recently.

Thank you in advance. This forum is a life-saver for trip planning.

Seat reservations on the Rhaetian Railway are advisable. It’s also advisable to buy your train ticket online in advance so you don’t need to do it at the train station in Tirano which can have crowded ticket lines. You can do this at www.sbb.ch and also at www.Rhb.ch The regular red Rhaetian trains run frequently and you’ll see schedules at www.sbb.ch

You might consider breaking up the 4.5-hour train trip from Tirano to Chur by staying overnight in the alpine town of Pontresina, which is a beautiful alternative to St. Moritz, just six miles away, You can then complete the train route by continuing the next day from Pontresina to Chur,
