How many nights will you be in Milan, and will you travel onward by train or airplane from there? That information may affect the recommendations.

We will only be in Milan 1 night and then flying to Paris.

In that case, I suggest you book a hotel near the train stations, such as hotel Berna which is very popular here. Have a nice dinner nearby at this Osteria:
