Hi, I want to plan a trip beginning of November for the Bernina Express, arriving in Italy from Manchester UK to Milan BGY and then the Bernina Train to Chur and flying out of Zurich back to Manchester. UK
I am looking at 5 or 6 days, flying into Milan has a morning flight (flying into Zurich was arrival 9pm hence why i have chosen starting in Italy) but I am unsure where best to stay for a 2/3 nights before boarding the BE in Tirano heading to Chur for 2/3 nights and then the train to Zurich airport. Any tips welcomed. thanks! L
Flying into Malpensa or Linate? From Manchester, UK or Manchester, NH?
BTW, I have been shot down before for spelling the origin point of the BE the way you did. Tirana is the capital of Albania, Tirano is the terminus of the Bernina Express. :-)
just to say a tiny spelling mistake can take you many miles off your trip - Tirana, with an A, is the capital of the country of Albania. The Italian town at the south end of the Bernina line is Tirano, with an O.
Thanks amended the spelling. Flying into Manchester UK as I'm from Wales. Any Milan Airport works to be honest.
Any town along the east shore of Lake Como has train service to Tirano. Most people will tell you to stay in Varenna as travelers have a penchant for congregating all in the same place, but any place from Lecco to Colico is good.
The advantage of Varenna is that the mid-lake shuttle service is there for boat rides to Bellagio and Menaggio. November will be a tad chilly lake side and some hotels will be closed I imagine.
