Tips on Extending Stay in Rome following Best of Italy 17 Day Tour

We are taking the Best of Italy 17 Day Tour, ending in Rome and plan to extend our stay 2 days. We decided on tour dates without first knowing that many museums and other sites in and around Rome have free entry the first Sunday of the month, which is when our tour ends. To make matters worse, many museums are closed on Monday, the second day of our extension. Has anyone experienced whether the museums are extra crowded on days the entry is free or are they still doable? Our tour includes the Vatican, so we will have already visited that site. Suggestions for what to visit in our 2 days will be appreciated!

Free Sunday is crazyily busy! We always avoided it, prefering to pay to go when fewer people were in attendance.

What time of year are you there? What do you like outside of museums? Perhaps a day trip to Ostia Antica if the R.S. tour doesn't go there. There are SOME museums open on Mondays. Ara Pacis adn Chiostro della Barmante come to mind. Or maybe take a food tour or a cooking class.

Book the Borghese! Free Sunday would be a bonus, since places are limited anyway.

Does anyone know if it's like Paris where the biggies are mobbed but the lesser museums aren't crowded?

Not all sights are closed on Mondays. It looks like Ostia Antica is open daily and well worth a 1/2 day.
