Tips for Volterra

Taking a spur of the moment type trip tomorrow. Plan on seeing Volterra, San Gimignano, Vinci and Siena over the weekend. Haven't read up on anything yet in the RS books but wondering if anyone would have any tips for sights, food etc in addition to what's in the book. Thanks in advance.

We had lunch in Volterra at a RS recommendation and it was really good-the one that serves cafeteria style at lunch and regular table service at dinner. Sorry but I can't remember the name but look in the RS guidebook. In Siena we had dinner at Taverna La Tellina-tiny, and reservation needed.

Obvious stuff. In Volterra you will see the wonderful Roman ruins from the walls. Visit the Eutuscan museum to see all the coffins. In San G, you must climb to the top of the tower to get views of the town and the surrounding countryside. Shopping for fabrics in San G, if you want, grab a wonderful handmade tablecloth or towel from one of the many shops there. In Siena, climb to the top of the bell tower (see if you can get all the way to the bell!) The views of the piazza from there are great. Of course you have to see the Duomo too, research the story of how it wasn't completed because of the Black Plague, and make sure you see the unfinished wall! The statues on the front of the Duomo were completed for the finished church, and now crowd the front. As with any town, get off the main street, main piazza to a small out of the way place to eat. Everyone goes like lemmings to places that Rick recommends...we go the opposite direction and have found many great places to eat! We poke around and see if anyone is speaking English - if they aren't, we're there to eat.

We were in Volterra last week and had some excellent pizza for lunch at Trattoria Il Poggio. It is located on the street to the left of the town hall (as you face the town hall). I believe that it is the same street that leads down to the Porta all'Arco.

Thanks all! I'm the same way Ellen. Try to explore every street and lane I can.
