Tips for Touring Sicily

Does seeing the Valley of Temples in Agrigento require strenuous walking?

Are the trains in Sicily reliable?
Any hotel suggestions for Taormina and Syracuse?
Is Catania a "must see"?
We're late to planning our trip coming up in 2 wks - Oct 7!
Any info will be appreciated

The Valley of Temples in Agrigento is not strenuous, there is walking up some gentle hills. At the top it seemed pretty flat to me. Seems you can walk as slow as you need to - unless you are on a tour.
It is really beautiful at night... the illumination is wonderful.
Catania is not a must see for me - there are places I liked better (smaller towns). My favorite place was Cefalu.
I stayed at the Hotel Victoria (right on the main street) in Taormina.
Here is an excellent site I used for info on Sicily.

Just got back from Sicily yesterday and I'm not sure you can count on any form of transportation to be reliable. Even my rental car ended up having a flat tire (not covered by Super CDW, of course). I don't think I would go without a rental car though, but I'm the type who gets a thrill driving in Italian cities.

Catania is definitely NOT a "must see". Sorry, can't help with lodging recommendations, I stayed with family. But, be sure to get a place on Ortygia when in Siracusa.

Walking is easy and relatively flat at the Valley of the Temples.

Travel by bus is much more reliable than by train in Sicily. Trains are not the best way to travel in Sicily.

Skip Catania, but see Taormina, Siracusa, Noto (as a day trip from Siracusa) and Mount Etna.

Villa Schuler is a good hotel choice in Taormina.

Ortygia is the place to stay in Siracusa and there are many good hotel choices. Try Algila Ortigia Charme Hotel, Residence Hotel Alla Giudecca, Hotel Roma, L'Approdo delle Sirene (B&B) or Palazzo del Sale (B&B).
