Tips for car rental pick up / Return near Rome

My family of 5 will arrive after midnight at FCO from Barcelona. We would like to rent a car to travel to Florence area for a few days before returning to see Rome.

A few notes: we would like to rent a car due to the flexibility it offers us and cost. The sequence of the trip is set due to tickets that we have in Rome.

Questions:
1) Is there a way to pick up a car in FCO after midnight? My husband would prefer to pick up car straight away so we can travel outside of the Rome airport area before resting for the night. I can't seem to find an option for that. If we can't pick up the rental after midnight, is our only option to stay at an airport hotel and pick up the car in the am?

2) When we return from Florence we would like to drop off the car before our stay in Rome. Do we need to drop off at the Rome airport or are there better places to drop off the car that don't require us to drive in the busy parts of Rome. We are lodging near the Piazza Navona.

Thanks for any tips that you could provide!

My advice is to stay at a hotel close to the airport and pick up your car in the morning. Why pay for rental time and have it just sit in the parking lot that night? Where you drop it off will be determined by who you rent the car from in the first place. Some companies will allow you to drop off at satellite locations, but check the cost to see if there is a drop off fee.

Renting a car in Rome is no different than renting in a large US city.

I did a quick check of Herz FCO and they close at midnight. I don't think you have any choice. I think the easiest solution is to stay at the FCO Hilton and pick up the car in the morning. Even if you could rent a car after midnight, by the time you picked up the car and drove an hour to get north of Rome, it would be 3 or 4 in the morning. I'm sure everyone would be exhausted the next day and it wouldn't be much fun.
