We are in Rome now and the restaurants are now requesting tips when you get your check. Also, tip jars at the registers. So far, nowhere else in Italy, just Rome.
They might as well put an American flag next to the tip request. Visitors from other European nations won't be tipping.
This has been appearing for years in various countries. I remember seeing it in Germany about 10 years ago - on checks, tip jars. Next noticed in England. I’m sure I’ve seen and ignored in other countries as well. Definitely a tip request, not a “service charge” that one also sees on checks.
We are starting to see this in the UK. It’s targeting Americans. Ignore it.
I was going to say the same as above, it was noticeable in Rome last Spring that the tipping demands were targeted. The majority of our time was spent in Sorrento and there was no expectations or pressure but once in Rome it bordered on aggressive.
