Tipping for private transfers

Hello!

We are a family of 4 and hired transfers from FCO to our Airbnb in Rome and also to/from our hotel in Venice (from train station and to airport) as well as to/from airport in Paris.

What is the general tipping amount per leg? Seems as if most journeys are 30ish minutes.

Thank you!

Tipping is not a thing in Italy whether at restaurants, taxis or hired cars. On occasion I have rounded up the Euro amount, in restaurants have left the coins of any change I may have received. If driver helps haul bags into hotel or provides an extra service then a few Euro…maybe €5 at most.

For a similar distance in NY I'd guess we would give a taxi/ Uber driver $10-$20? But $50+ if it was a private hired car service over an Uber. I do know tipping is different in Italy I just wasn't sure if that applied to all services.. it's super hard for us to remember as tipping is a huge factor in service industry jobs here. We are just programmed to factor that into all costs lol

As one posted above, "Tipping is not a thing in Italy whether at restaurants, taxis or hired cars." If a car service driver helps with the luggage, we'll tip a few Euro. On one long haul transfer that took well over an hour without any traffic problems, we tipped 10 pounds becaues the driver was almost like a tour guide during the trip and made the transfer quite enjoyable.

I once had a driver that did a 45 minute transer in Italy. He spoke fluent English and pointed things out on the way. He was very good and professional.

I gave him a 5 Euro tip and he appreciated it.

Tipping is nowhere near the same in Italy as in the US.

your private driver from Venice to the airport won't be at the train station but at Piazzale Roma, one stop further on the Vaporetto and across the Grand Canal (linked by a high bridge). As you already have your driver I won't try to change your mind, but for other readers - 2 frequent bus companies go from the same Piazzale Roma to the same stop right outside the door at the airport, in pretty much the same amount of time for a fraction of the cost - even for 4 - and no worry about doing the right thing about the tip....

Thanks, Nigel! We opted to do the water taxi for the experience and views of the city... obviously not best for budget lol But will keep the buses in mind for sure if our plans change.
