Hi there,
We are traveling to Italy for 9 days before embarking on an 11 day Adriatic cruise. There is 7 of us so we are arranging a private transfer from our apartment in Rome to the port and then from the port to FCO after our cruise. Many people recommend Romecabs.com. Their quote is 190 Euros. They also say customary tipping is 15-20%. That means an extra 25-35 Euros. I have read, and been told, that taxis are individually owned so there is no need for a tip and RS recommends to only round up the fare. Probably these private transfer services are employees so some sort of tip is recommended. I must admit that, even at home, I usually only tip cabs 10%. What has been your experience when tipping these transfer services? What percentage do you normally tip? Also, if you have taken them to or from the port before, do they have access to the ship or are they only able to drop or pick you up at the shuttle bus? Thanks,
Bernadette

According to whom? The Italian Drivers Association?
The customary tip in Italy is zero, who owns the car/the licence/the company is not your problem.
So You can joyfully avoid tipping, like an Italian would do, and they have no reason to complain. Adding 15/20% to the cost of a service is ridiculous; it also makes things easier for unscrupulous companies that impose a "double standard" on english speaking foreign tourists.
If the driver is helpful with the luggage for seven people, points out places of interest on the way, and is generally helpful, then I'd probably round up to an even 200. But not more than that.
Tipping is not an Italian custom. Just pay the fare and go on your way.
Buon viaggio,
Try getting a quote from Suntransfers.com. I’ve used them many times in Rome and France and they are resononable and very dependable. Used them last year for trip to Rome city center to cruise port and using them again this Fall. If driver is polite and helpful I tip around 10%.
Thanks for ignoring local customs.
Dario, Is your last comment about ignoring local customs directed at me?
of course not. The mere fact that you asked shows you are not that kind of tourist.
Thank you everyone. I have now booked the initial transfer from our VRBO in Rome to the cruise ship with sun transfers.com as somebody suggested. Although they say they can only take medium sized suitcases, they did give the option of adding a folding wheelchair, which my mother-in-law has, at no extra cost. Again, this travel forum is fantastic and thank you to everyone who has answered this and my previous inquiries.
