Our hotel in Sorrento has arranged to have a driver pick us up at the train station in Naples. The charge will be 70 euros (cash) when we arrive at the hotel to be paid at the front desk. My question is, what kind of tip should we give the driver? Thanks for all your help planning this trip - we leave in 3 1/2 weeks!
Italy doesn't have the same expectation(some would say requirement!) of tipping that we do in the USA. Generally, IF you feel the service has been great, tipping is a sign of appreciation.
I tipped 2 euros to the hotel shuttle driver who took a group of us to the airport at 7am. He was friendly, didn't scare me to death, helped with everyone's luggage, AND agreed to come drive the shuttle on a Saturday holiday that he could have taken off.
It's a judgement call based on your personal experience, number in your party, state of your luggage (extra-heavy bags? Tip higher), and the service you receive.
I usually ask someone locally for advice, but since you cant do that I would not give over 10%. If you pay at the desk, ask the clerk for advice.
If he suggest 3 to 5 euros, give him 3. If he says 7 euros, ask him if 5 would do. But if he gives excellent service up the amount.
In other words, negotiate; people in Europe do it constantly.
