Tipping at B&B's in Italy

I don't generally tip the owners of a B&B. However, many have hired help that serve in the morning or clean the room - these staff I do tip always.

Very little tipping in Europe anywhere by the locals and local tourists. At the risk of causing ructions I will say that American habits of heavy tipping cause feelings of happiness in many workers who are tipped. It also frequently causes feelings of embarrassment, as for those people it is not the way they were brought up. In areas where there are large numbers of American tourists, some workers grow to expect tips from everybody which then makes it difficult for local European tourists.
