I’m in Rome now, and wanted to share my discovery that you can use the Uber app on your phone to call for a taxi here. Just open the Uber app, enter your destination, and ‘Taxi’ pops up as one of the options you can use (along with Uber Black, more expensive). We’ve used it frequently, and had a taxi within minutes each time.
You can also simply walk to a taxi stand, but this has been helpful for those moments when a ride was needed quickly and the nearest taxi stand was a ways away.

Why would the Uber app have city taxis? Uber is always so much cheaper than taxis. Are there no Ubers in Rome? When u call for a cab, the meter begins immediately & u pay for the time it takes for the taxi to come from wherever it was when they got the call. If your hotel calls a cab, it’s much more expensive than going to the cab station on every few streets.
I’m confused & I’m coming to Rome in two weeks!! Help! Thanks!

The OP is correct.
The Italian Taxi Association, the main consortium of Taxi companies in Italy, operates an app called ItTaxi, the most popular taxi app in Italy (which works like Uber).
But, a few months ago, the Uber company reached an agreement with the Italian taxi consortium operating ItTaxi and now one can also use the Uber App to summon a taxi part of the ItTaxi app network. In other words ItTaxi and Uber are interchangeable and one can use either.
The joint agreement started in Rome and Milan last summer, but it is going to be extended nationwide. Some details in the article below by IlSole24Ore, Italy’s leading financial daily newspaper. It was also reported in US news last May when the deal was reached (see Reuters’ article)

Just got back from York, England where Uber X and other levels are very available. Uber App there also gives you the option to call a local taxi at sometimes a lesser rate and pay with credit card associated with your Uber account. Sounds good that it is available now in Rome because you will not only know your fare in advance, but also be sure you will be paying with a creidit card through the app and not be asked for euros.
