Timing of flights

Has anyone flown from PMO (Sicily) into to FCO (Rome) to get on a connecting flight to the states (with different airlines) and had to retrieve luggage at FCO and get to gate of departing flight home.? I booked Alaska Air from FCO to SEA direct but they don't know which terminal they will be in yet so I have no idea of distance to location. Hope this makes sense!

Confirming, your flight from PMO-FCO and FCO-SEA are two separate tickets? Or are they on the same reservation?

How much time do you have between flights?

If they are separate, and your first flight is delayed enough where you miss the second flight, you will have to purchase a new ticket at the last minute rate.

Sorry - not on same ticket and will have one bag checked ( the carry on international size and weights are smaller than what I carry on here at home). If plane from Sicily on time will have a little over three hours. My concern is it could be delayed.

You have the right concern and frankly I think this is a high-risk plan (the other way around, with the long-haul international flight first, would be less so).

You will have to pick up your luggage -- I don't think any of the airlines that fly PMO-FCO, i.e. Aeroitalia / Ryanair / ITA, will check through your bag to Alaska on a separate ticket -- and go through security again, along with outbound passport control. It looks like Alaska will likely fly out of Terminal 3, as does Aeroitalia; Ryanair and ITA operate out of Terminal 1.

Is there any way you can fly into FCO the day before?

You will need a couple of hours if all works well and three hours would be best. The big issue will be time of day and clearing immigration. AND, of course, if your first flight is on time. Second, our prior experience is that they will let you jump the line if short time.

You didn’t say how long your layover is at FCO between flights and terminal changes. I would allow 3 hour minimum - more if you can. I don’t like to be stressed trying to catch a flight, that most likely doesn’t have another one that day. If you can’t get at least 3 hours, I would come in the day before. At least that way your overnight hotel stay is planned and not a last minute scramble.

You will have to...

--collect your luggage (who knows how long this will take.)

--walk to check-in (and possibly have to change terminals.)

--check in your bag

--go through security

--go through exit passport control

--walk to gate.

If your first flight is on time, you should be okay. If it's delayed, you could have a problem.

I fly a lot and I wouldn't do this when connecting to a long haul flight on two separate tickets. While everything could work out just fine, I don't want the extra stress.

YMMV

Thanks everyone. The flight I’m looking at gives me 3 hours 10 min to get to my flight home ( if on time). I can chose one that gives me 7 hours in between but that seems way too much time. I’m still checking flights to see if more come up as options. I fly out on May 20th. I’m not familiar with FCO so will need plenty of time.
