We are traveling from Rome to Salerno by train and plan on taking the ferry from Salerno to Positano. What I need to know and cannot figure out is how much time to allow before the "scheduled" ferry departure? I've read the disclaimers everywhere about how the ferries are subject to cancellation everyday. We just need to know how early to arrive in order to make the ferry (because there is a 3-hr break of no ferries in the day we don't want to miss the last morning one and be stuck standing outside all day). How much time should we allow? (is getting to Salerno 30 min before ferry leaves cutting it too close?)

The train station in Salerno is only about a two-block walk from the "Concordia" dock from which the Positano ferry leaves. I leave it to your imagination whether 30 minutes might be cutting it a little too fine. You can also take a SITA bus from Salerno to Positano, with one transfer in Amalfi.
