Timing for David in Florence

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

My Husband and I, along with kids 19 and 21 years, have a quick stop in Florence on a Thursday in May. We arrive by train at 930 am and leave again either at 4:00 or 5:00 that same afternoon. We want to see David, the Duomo, and, hoping for a beautiful day, explore several squares and outdoor areas. As I look at the map I believe it makes sense to do David first and then head south.

How much time would you allow to get off the train, store baggage, and walk to the Accademia? This is everyone's first visit to Florence so I imagine we will need extra time for gawking. Because of our short visit, I want to be efficient in planning but I don't want to be jogging from the train station!

I'm also open to opinions on "can't miss" spots for this quick Florence experience. Especially free, non-museum spots. Thanks!!

Well, difficult to advise you on what else you could see in such a short Time!!
Florence is a city you walk not drive, and to catch a bit of the spirit you must have time to walk. More, if you take a taxi or if you walk, it will take you roughly the same time because of one way streets or streets not open to motor vehicles.
If you are interested to see the David, you need to go to Piazza Della Signoria, where the copy of the David by Michellangelo is, and where the original was until 1910 (palazzo vecchio). In this way, you can see for what building it was created. The original is at the academia.
Interesting also if interested by the David is to go and see the extremely beautiful but small David by Donatello which is on the Bargello's museum.
Donatello's David is featuring David after the battle against Goliath, Goliath's head at his feet. Michellangelo's David features David before the battle, David is meant to gauge Goliath, see his eyes' expression.
Hope I did help you. I recommend even if you are very short to stay at the very least one full day in Florence.

The David is a must see for sure. Help yourselves out and make a time specific reservations - otherwise way too much time will be spent waiting in lines. There is much more to see in the Accademia. Use a good map to make sure you see plenty of Florence as you walk from the station to the museum and then on to the Duomo, and the Piazzas on the way to the Ponte Vecchio. There are several places to stop and "gawk". Before you plan your entry time at the Accademia, look see if there are other museums along the way that interest you - and make time specific reservations there too. Honestly, an hour in the Accademia isn't too much but if you feel your time is short you can probably do the "drive by" in 30 minutes.

You really don't have time to do too much inside sightseeing but there are loads of outdoor "free stuff" to do. Santa Croce is a beautiful church with plenty of interesting things to see (still has a small entry fee). Great leather shopping for the whole family. Walk across the Ponte Vecchio (maybe your husband will buy you a necklace?). Tuscan food is truly amazing so make sure you have lunch - and splurge!

Answering the question about 25 minutes. There isn't too much gawking to be had between SMN train station and the Accademia.

Seeing the Duomo and its square, (campanile, duomo, battistero), would take you at least 1 and 1/2 hour for a very quick look.
If you get into the different buildings, go at the top either of the duomo or campanile, take time to look at the different paintings, sculptures, architecture, you would be more on 3-4 hours.
There are still many other things to discover in Florence, sunset on the Arno, with Ponte Vecchio or Della Trinita in the background. Very sad not to see Basilica of Santa Croce! Oltrarno with Santo Spirito and San Frediano and all the artists' bodegas, all of this are 'must see'.
And this is certainly not an exhaustive list.

I know I'm breaking the hearts of all of you who love Florence! We'll see more on the next trip, right? Isn't that the philosophy?

Hope next time you'll be able to remain longer.

While some of you stash luggage at the train station, others can go across the street to the TI office and get a map; the rep can plot a walk for you on the map.

Get your Accademia tickets online before you leave, and you can skip the line and go straight to the security station. The other sculptures are worth a look as well.

There are tons of places for lunch, some cafeteria-style if you want something quick.

Piazza della Signoria has been mentioned, it's near the Duomo. You can probably fit in the Ponte Vecchio as well. There are several opportunities to climb something: the Duomo, the Campanile, and the Palazzo Vecchio are popular.

Don't forget a gelato break.

Good advice from Zoe. If you want to see 'the' David and not merely the copy in Piazza Della Signoria, order your tickets in advance - although Piazza della Signoria and the sculptures at bordering Loggia dei Lanzi are well worth the look .

You can also easily fit the Duomo and some gelato in on your timetable. No need for taxis: central Florence is not that big and easily walked.

Thanks, Everyone. I am planning to order tickets ahead for the Accademia. I think I'll go with the 10:30 time. Seems that will give us time to get organized and find our way. Can't wait!

Try to go to the Bargello museum too. There is rarely a queue. Museum is small but really really beautiful.
