Timed entry for Museo Archeologico Napoli?

I am planning on purchasing an 3 Day Artecard online. In Rick’s guidebook he mentions to purchase entry for Museo Archeologico in advance. Does one need a timed entry in late April? How do I get my free entry to the museum with the card if I have to buy the ticket ahead of time? I read on one post that the card gives you a skip the line privilege. I’ve read at least 20 posts here and on TA and still not clear.

I think you'll be OK just with the card. I went to the museum in late February 2023, and it wasn't busy at all. There may have been one person in front of me at the ticket window. However, my time is never so tight that I'd be annoyed if I had to wait 5 minutes, so YMMV.

Do record all the numbers you see as you purchase the ArteCard in case there's a technical glitch at the museum. I think that may have been one of the places where the app wouldn't open for me, so I had to show the staff person my card number. She was able to look it up easily.

OK thanks, I’ll just throw caution to the wind and it should be fine. We definitely have some time to wait as the day is dedicated to the museum and then whatever else we can tag on it. Italy is in such great demand that I become wary of all the timed entries required. Last year we did many time entries but they were in the big three cities.
I read that you can take a picture of the two QR codes, provided with the card, and have that as a back up. I thought that was a good idea.

It didn't occur to me to do that, but it sounds like a fine idea.

One place in Naples where you will need to pre-book is the Capella Sansevero. It's within easy walking distance of the Archaeological Museum; just be sure you schedule it so you don't have to cut your time short at the museum. The Capella regularly sells out--not months in advance, I don't think, but probably more than a day or two. I think it was multiple days at the time of my visit, and April will surely be significantly busier.

I think there are catacombs requiring a tour, and thus pre-booking. I didn't go to any of those.

That's all I can think of except for the famous pizza place(s)--always a long line.

Thanks for the heads up. I guess that I’ll buy the card, then later make a reservation for Sansevero using a registered number on the card?
I’ve now been contemplating getting the 7Day card instead because even though it doesn’t include transportation, we will have more free entries, and it’s less expensive.
We will be going to Pompeii the following day and I’d like to have that entry included with the card. With the 3Day, if we use it for a second entry after the museum, we’ll be paying for subsequent
entries (albeit 50%), probably a minor detail. Even though it sounds good to just get on and off transit with a pass, I’m not willing to do the math!
We will be there for three days and I still haven’t figured out what we’ll be doing on the third day. Could be just walking around a lot.
I’m not convinced I want to go into catacombs. I know it’s a big draw, but probably not for me.

I'm sorry I misled you. The Capella Sansevero isn't covered by the card--or at least it wasn't last year. I thought of it for you since it's so close to the Archaeological Museum and I knew tickets would almost certainly be sold out if decided to go see it after arriving in Naples.

Both the Circumvesuviana and Naples' city transportation are very inexpensive, so I don't think you're giving up a lot of value by not having the ArteCard with transportation benefits. But I say that as someone who much prefers to enjoy cities by walking.

Got it, thanks! It was on my list but I didn’t have a clue that it was in high demand.
We usually end up walking everywhere too, but for the longer A to B stretches. Approaching 70 makes conserving energy a must, although last year in Italy, we averaged 8 miles per day over six weeks. Getting lost helped that.

Naples is hilly. Much of the time you'll be on the flat if you're walking parallel to the coast, but if you head inland, you will eventually be going uphill. It's not too bad up to the Archaeological Museum, but if you go farther up, to the Capodimonte art museum, it will be quite a workout. I counted 131 steps at the end. (There are buses, but there's no Metro station up there.) There are hills to the west as well. You need to look in the direction you're heading to see whether it looks problematic. Streets that seem to intersect on a map (if you don't look really closely) may not, because one of them may be 30 feet higher than the other.

Prior to responding to another thread, I looked at my map of Venice and realized I hadn't mentioned the need for pre-booking the Treasure of San Gennaro if you want to see it. I'm not sure it really sells out in advance, but I think they control access, so it's not just a matter of walking in.

That looks like it’s on the Artecard list. But I’m sure you meant Naples not Venice ha ha ha.!

Yes, I did! I'm planning on my own trip to northern Italy, and my brain is scrambled.

That's great if the treasure is covered. It's not a cheap ticket.

Yes, it is covered. If not, we’ll find out when we get there!
Last year we were in Venice for four nights, this year we’re going back for 10. Just want to drink it in slowly, it’s so lovely and so much to do.
