Time taken to deplane, pass through passport control and baggage collection at Malpensa airport

I would be arriving at Malpensa airport by 10 am assuming my flights are well on time. How much time would it take for me to deplane, clear passport control and collect baggage ? Appreciate a vague time estimate . My onward journey is to Venice from Milano centrale station at 13:05. which is the best recommended transport to the central station from Malpensa. Train or Shuttle bus?

Time at MXP depends on how many flights are coming in at around the same time, could be less than an hour or closer to two hours. It's rather a long walk to the Malpensa Express platform. I prefer the train into Milano Centrale, since you have to catch another train anyway, and there won't be any traffic jams on the way. It's about an hour from MXP to Milano Centrale.

justin,

I assume you're arriving at MXP Terminal 1 on a flight from the U.S.?

It's difficult to provide an estimate, but I'd allow at least 45 minutes to an hour. There are a number of variables including delays in getting the luggage on the carousel, how many Immigration officers are working, how many other flights are arriving at that time, etc.

The easiest way to get from MXP to Milano Centrale is the Malpensa Express (train). The trip is about 52 minutes. You can buy tickets at the airport rail station, but BE SURE to validate them prior to boarding the train or you may face hefty fines! Note that there are two routes for the M.E., one to Centrale and one to Cadorna, so be sure to board the correct train.

I arrived at Malpensa in July 2012 and had to catch a train to Florence.
However I did not pre purchase my train ticket for this very reason, instead buying it on arrival at the station.
Checking my diary reveals my timings:
0615 Flight from Singapore lands
0700 Thru the airport and on a shuttle bus (virtually walked straight through - I am sure this is not normally the case)
0810 Shuttle arrives Milano Centrale
0820 On a train bound for Florence
Personally I would consider 4 hours minimum between flight arrival and train departure - 1.5 hrs to get thru the airport, 1.5 hrs for shuttle bus transfer and 1 hour at least up your sleeve.

Appreciate all your feedback.. @ djp_syd , I expect to be in your scenario considering the time frame I have. All I can do is pack light and save the time to wait for baggage. I would be arriving at terminal 1. How far is the train platform from terminal 1 and how frequent are the trains? I have roughly about 3 hours to catch my train to Venice.

There are 2 trains every hour to Centrale. Figure about 10 minutes walking.

Just to clarify.....

The Malpensa Express listed in the previous reply is the train from the airport to Milano Centrale (or Milano Cadorno).

The Malpensa Shuttle is the Bus, which also goes to Milano Centrale.

The cost is about the same for each of them, but overall the train is probably a bit faster as there are no concerns about traffic, and also more comfortable (the Buses are usually packed full!). The Bus is the only option from MXP Terminal 2, as there's no rail station there.

I agree with the time estimates everyone presented. Generally, we pass through from deplaning to exiting in about an hour.

We always use the Milano Shuttle bus into central Milano. The bus stop is just outside Uscita (exit) 2, which is way closer then the express train and deposits you outside of Stazione centrale. The ticket costs around 10€ and sometimes they offer two for the price of one ticket.

Since you are moving onto Venezia via train, it makes more sense to take the Malpensa express train because it will bring you inside the station.

Buon viaggio,
