Time Management for Cruise and Amalfi Coast

Planning a first trip to Italy in May '25. Tossing this question to those who know Italy. Does it matter which happens first? Three nights in Rome, then cruise the Western Mediterranean, followed by Amalfi Coast trip (from Civitavecchia by train to Naples, then on to Sorrento for 4-5 days). Or, visiting AC first, then doing the cruise?

Just a Note-Sorrento is a lovely base but it is not ON the Amalfi coast

I don’t think the order matters but if you are flying home from Rome I would end there
If you can fly home from Naples then ending in Sorrento is fine as long as your flight is later in the day-otherwise spend night before departure in Naples
I would go with whatever order gives you the simplest transportation
IOW you don’t want to end in Sorrento and try to get back to Rome for a flight-it’s almost impossible to make a flight from Rome the day you leave Sorrento

Getting to/ from AC/Sorrento just involves a lot of time/travel

Fly in to Naples
Bus to Sorrento
Then to cruise-allow plenty of time!
End in Rome

Fly in to Rome
Rome
cruise
Sorrento
Fly home from Naples

We spent 2 weeks in Sorrento last year and if I had a do-over I would spend my first night or nights in Rome before trying to go all the way to Sorrento after an overnight flight. No matter how you try, getting to Sorrento from FCO takes time and it adds to an already long travel day. You may even want to split up Rome to the beginning and end. I definitely wouldn't plan on being in Sorrento the same morning as my flight home from Rome. Transportation is slow, chaotic, and unpredictable in the region.

And note that flying home from Rome (rather than Naples) on the day you wake up in Sorrento is nearly impossible (3-4 seat public transit ride, many hours.) Positano, actually ON the Amalfi Coast is not possible to fly home the same day.
