Time in Amalfi Coast

Hello all,

I am considering a France-Italy trip in fall of 2017, with the hopes of taking two weeks total to go to Provence, visit family in northern Italy, then head down the the Amalfi Coast/Naples (which we missed on our main tour of Italy). However, as I'm learning more about the Amalfi Coast area, it seems that one could easily fill a trip with just that one area. However, with only perhaps 2 trips to Europe left before it'll be time to start thinking about a family, devoting a whole trip to the Amalfi Coast would take away from doing a more varied tour this year (perhaps Switzerland/Austria/Prague). I know this is a little relative, but I was wondering if seasoned world travelers here could tell me: does it seem reasonable to only allot 4-5 days in Naples/Amalfi Coast for the sake of leaving room for other big travel destinations like Prague (which we might not otherwise see)? Or is this area big enough that it might be worth forsaking the other experiences to spend an entire trip here? Would love to hear thoughts from people more experienced than us. Thanks!

Wow! 2 weeks and you want to do Provence, northern Italy, Amalfi Coast, and Prague? You're going to hear this a lot, but that's impossible. I suggest you think hard about your priorities. Choose 2 or 3 destinations. Also, check which ones have easy and inexpensive flight connections. For example, you might fly into Milan and see the relatives. Fly to Naples and go to the Amalfi Coast. Fly from Naples to Nice, Marseille, or Avignon, depending on costs and what you want to see. All this is kind of abstract, as I haven't researched the flights, but you can, on one of the sites like skyscanner.com.
Also, 2 weeks is too much for the Amalfi Coast, but good for Southern France, a large area with countless attractions. I think your best option would be to just go there.
You didn't ask, but there is a life after you have children.

Oops, no, sorry for not writing clearly. Trip #1 would be Prague plus one or two other nearby locations (ideally trip 1 would be a shorter trip to save money since Trip #2 is the biggie). Trip #2 would be up to 16 days to do Provence, a couple nights with my family in northern Italy (no sightseeing), then down the the Amalfi Coast. I guess what I was saying was that - if 9-10 full days or so (once you take out train travel, jetlag day, and time with family) is too little for getting a peek at both Provence and the Amalfi Coast, I could always make Trip #1 Provence and Trip #2 the Amalfi Coast, but that would mean I'd need to sacrifice seeing a different part of the world like Prague, so I figured I'd ask around and see what people thought about Provence and Amalfi in one trip.

Thanks so much for your tips on flying, and for your perspectives on 2 weeks being too much for Amalfi but good for Provence. Will definitely take those things into consideration!

Don't meant to imply no life after children...we are just not in a financial spot where it is easy to make these trips (even going without kids has been a huge splurge), so I'm not sure we'll be able to afford going to Europe again until children are grown (though the hope is that I'm wrong and it will work out so that we can) :)

If you are looking for suggestions, I would not spend much time in Naples (other than as a point of arrival and departure) and head to Sorrento and use that as your base. From there you could do lots of day trips, enjoy a few days in Sorrento and then onto the Amalfi Coast either as a day trip, or to spend a few nights.

I think if you are looking at something like
Provence - 5 nights
Nice (Cote d'Azur) - 3 nights
Family in northen Italy - 3 nights
Sorrento (Amalfi Coast) - 5 nights
...then it is a very worthwhile, nay fabulous, trip.

Thanks guys! Yes, I'm thinking basing ourselves in Sorrento sounds great. I haven't gotten much into the planning phase yet, but am interested in Positano, Pompeii, Paestum, and possibly Capri/the grottos. Thanks for your tips!

Last year, we had 4 days between a wedding in Florence and a meeting with friends in Budapest and we decided to finally try to stay somewhere around Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast.

Even though I could stay a week in this area, the four days was a great taste of the region.

Go for it !

I think allotting 5 nights is good for the Amalfi Coast area, you can see everything in that timeframe Personally I would rather stay 6 nights and break up the stay in 3 nights at 2 different places but that is just me.

We stayed both in Positano and Sorrento even though they are not far apart they are quite different. if you don't like to move around as much you could just choose 1.
I prefer Positano by a good amount but Sorrento is better for logistics especially if your only base for the region.
