Time from Ronme termini to the Vatican?

We'll be in Rome and visiting the Vatican on Friday morning. We'll be staying near enough to the Termini station to start there. Home long can we expect it might take to get from RT to the Vatican-Metro or buses 64 or 40?

Jeff, As I recall, the trip from Termini to Vatican City takes about 20-minutes. Using Metro is the quickest method as it's not subject to "traffic issues". Use Metro Line "A" (direction Battistini). There are two stops, Ottaviano San Pietro and Cipro Musei Vaticani. I believe I used the first one on my last trip (which is about six stops from Termini), but both will require a short walk. When you enter Vatican City, you'll pass through airport-style security, with scanners and armed guards. If you want to climb to the Roof, I'd recommend paying the small extra charge to take the elevator to reach the entrance to the passageway that leads to the roof (hopefully you're not claustrophobic). One word of caution regarding Bus 64 - it has somewhat of a "reputation" as a haven for pickpockets. It always seems to be tightly packed, so that provides excellent opportunities for the scammers to "ply their trade". Happy travels!

Thanks, Ken, Just what I needed. I read about Bus 64, and we'll try to avoid that. Jeff

From Ottiaviani it's a straight 10 minute walk to Vatican city along Ottiaviani Avenue.

While the 40 bus is packed like most buses and has a reputation, we have ridden it a number of times with no problems. We actually feel that the metro is potentially worse so we prefer the buses. Just a matter of personal choice.

The main bus terminal is in front of Termini. Buses unload and load-up there. Find your empty bus and board while there are seats available. This will cut down on the crowding/theft problem. Of course, if you are young and seated it is polite to give up your seat to an old/infirm/pregnant passenger. I saw a young woman try to give up her seat to a high-up priest (archbishop?) while I was on bus 64. He politely refused and got off near the Vatican after a few minutes on the bus.

Jeff, if you're headed to the Museums first, then take the metro from Roma Termini and get off at the Cipro stop: instructions - with pictures - are included here for this route. If you're headed towards the Basilica - and want to avoid the #64 bus... and also the walk from Castel Sant' Angelo (where the #40 ends), then take the #40 bus to Largo Argentina, jump off, and get on the next #62 bus. It gets closer than any other bus to the entrance of St. Peter's Basilica. When yo see St. Peter's in the windshield of the bus, push the bitton and get off at the next stop, adjacent to the Passetto. If you're not a metro fan, and you want to get to the Museums, then take the #40 again to Largo Argentina, get off and jump on the #492 bus. It will stop just at the end of the street from the Vatican Museums. See the map included in the link above for the bus stop locations!
