We are thinking of stopping in Pompeii on our way from Sorrento to Rome. Just wondering how much time to allot for a visit as we will be making a reservation for a fast train from Naples to Rome after visiting Pompeii. Would about 3 hours be enough time/too much time? We are not big history buffs. Thanks!
2 hours minimum inside. Safe bag check near ticket booth. 4 hours for serious visit, 6-8 hours comprehensive. Line, normally, at the ... how you say ... The Brothel.
I went with a tour group and they gave us approximately 2 or 3 hours there. That should be enough time for you to enjoy it.
We spent 4 hours and I could have spent more time.
3-4 hours. If you are not a history buff, why go?
We are not big history buffs
That being the case 2 hours may be enough for you. You may want to plan 3 hours in case it proves more interesting than you expect
I would err on the side of giving yourself extra time, if for nothing else than the transit time from Pompeii to Naples. I spent over 4 hours at Pompeii, and I wasn't a big history buff back then either.
The scavi is massive, and sometimes you feel like you are in a maze. For us, the best use of our time began with investigating just what we wanted to see ahead of time. There are better preserved houses that are worthwhile, like the House of Fawn, the House of Vetti, the House of Menander and the Villa of Mysteries. Many other places are just crumbled shells. You should view the several casts of victims to appreciate what happened to them here. Be sure to ask for a map, but don't be surprised if it is hard to decipher. I actually printed off a better map online before we left.. There is little shade, so take a water bottle with you. The bathrooms are at the entrance and in the middle of the scavi. There is a restaurant also in the middle. Hope this helps.
