Tickets to the Pantheon

We just returned from Rome and I wanted to give an update on the ticket situation at the Pantheon:

Tickets are required for entry (€5 euro each). These can be purchased in advance on the official Pantheon website or in person at the ticket office. There does not appear to be a restriction on the number of reservations per time slot. The third option is to buy online when arriving at the site (they have a QR code to the official website you can scan with a smartphone).

We decided not to buy tickets in advance in order to have more flexibility. When we showed up, there were LONG lines for the ticket office by those who also had not reserved in advance.

We had trouble using the official website as multiple credit cards were declined. The trick is to select “Other Payment Methods” and choose one of the PayPal account options. (It will first take you to a third party site regardless of payment option - just enter your email.)

Once we had purchased our online tickets on the spot, with a small ~€1 fee (I believe the credit card option also had a fee), we were able to walk right in!

I hope this is helpful for those who run into the same issue!

Thanks for sharing! Will be there in October so this is helpful.

This is incredibly helpful info about the third ticket option. I was hesitant to lock down an entrance time in a pre-booked ticket and now I know I don’t have to. Thank you!

This was hugely helpful, Chris. Thank you so much for taking the time to end frustration for me and others. Like you, I'd tried repeatedly on the official Musei Italiani website after having created an account on it. Both a credit and debit card were rejected as was my bank account for a draft. Once again, the RS forum comes to the rescue. I followed your advice to use Other Payment Methods and chose one of the PayPal options. It went through immediately. The official website is below in case anyone needs it. This is the only place to get a ticket from what I've read.

Although the official site offers an English option, as I went through the ticket buying process, the pages came up only in Italian with no English option. On my Chrome browser, I can translate any page to English with a right click of the mouse. This Translate to English option applies only to a specific page and will need to be repeated for other pages.

Here's the official Musei Italiani website for Pantheon tickets. You will choose a specific hour for entry.

I had a similar problem trying to get tickets for the Pantheon, and emailed for some help. I wanted to get the 9:00 time slot to hopefully minimize crowds. Once I followed the hints below, I was able to use my credit card and get the tickets I needed. (I don't use PayPal, and like to make most charges on a travel credit card for the protections that offers.) I had been using Safari, and switching to Google Chrome got me to the payment page...choosing the preset world bank option failed, but choosing Nexi worked just fine.

Here is the response I received from Helpdesk Musei italiani. Hope it is helpful to you!

Hello,
First, we recommend that you use a PC and Google Chrome to complete the procedure. Next, when you are at the payment stage we recommend that you proceed in this way: at the end of the transaction, when you can view the summary of your purchase, you should change the bank handling the process to Nexi or Intesa San Paolo.

If the problem persists, please contact

I also am having problems. It says my credit card is declined. I went to other payment types but I do not see where one can pay by PayPal. Can someone advise please?

If Laurie's above advice does not work, Call your credit card company. Tell 'em you are trying to make an online purchase overseas on a site that uses the "Verified by Visa" security protocol (or the Mastercard Secure-code equivalent).

If the employee answering the phone has no idea about these protocols, ask to speak with a manager from the fraud prevention department.

Just back from Rome last night. I too had tried to buy tickets online and was declined. The afternoon we arrive we went to the Pantheon and there were two sets of long lines one for cash purchase and the shorter but still long for credit card purchases. There was a kind employee at the front of the line who explained that they would not accept non-euro credit cards online but would in person. She told me to come back 9:00 am the next morning. The line was very short and we got in quickly. Inside it was not overwhelmed. When we left 10:15 the line was longer but not crazy. In the afternoon the lines filled the whole piazza.
