Should I buy tickets from Rome to Florence in advance or the day of travel?
Miguel,
You should be fine buying tickets either on the day of travel, or a few days prior. There are LOTS of trains on that route every day.
You can purchase tickets either at the staffed ticket office or from one of the automated Kiosks. You might find it helpful to have a look at www.roninrome.com for details on buying tickets, etc.
Happy travels!
And if you are a family or can travel at certain times you may have discounts available to you - I always find if you have the time talking to the ticket agent can be a good thing. In Rome they all speak English and they may be able to suggest the best fare, that you may not find yourself from the machine.
I thought using the ticket machines in the train stations was very easy- I did most of them when I got to Rome, but bought the tickets we needed for trains towards the end of the trip a day or two before we'd be needing them and had no problem either.
Thank you everyone for your help. You're comments are still welcome, if just to help me or someone else that might be having the same questions.
We just did the high-speed train from Rome to Florence on Sat. 4/24 purchasing our tickets when we got to the station in Rome for the 10:15 train but coach was sold out thus we had to do 1st class. Nice, but a little pricey.
I didn't buy in advance for Florence to Rome and planned to leave on a 5pm train on Friday (mid-February) - very popular time, apparently. I was in line at a ticket machine behind 3 incredibly inept (my kindest word) German girls who tied up the machine for more than 20 minutes before giving up - and they weren't even going to travel that evening! At least I got on the next train, at 6 pm.
I usually buy tickets a day or two in advance, just to avoid such situations.
