I waited too long to get tickets for Borghese Gallery. I can reasonably priced tickets for a tour in Spanish. I don’t know Spanish and I don’t want to be tied to s guided tour, so question is can I ditch the tour after entering the museum? I thought I read something in one of Ricks guidebooks about this being an option if you can’t get tickets to something? Anyone ever done this? Is it a really bad thing to do?

There's no reason you can't ditch a museum tour if it's during the regular public hours. Most people will be doing independent visits; you'll just be one of them. You should try to tell the guide you're going to see the museum on your own so he or she will not wait for you to show up.
