Tickets now or later

I know there have been a couple threads recently on similar topics, so I apologize if this is redundant. I have read through them, but still don't understand one thing. Obviously, buying advanced tickets for main sightseeing activities (Vatican, Colloseum, Uffizi, etc) to beat lines is the way to go, but is the demand in Italy so great that I should buy them now (we don't even get to Italy until April 3rd)? or is this something I can do just a few days before we intend to go, as in a day or two in advance? I generally like to travel "loose"; it seems it would be difficult to anticipate now what I will feel like doing 3-4 weeks from now, especially down to the hour.

Appreciate any insight.

Are you traveling so flexibly that you also don't have hotel reservations? If you do have hotel reservations, then go ahead and commit to the museums, too, preferably as the first event of each day, so that the latter part of the day can stay flexible. The time around Easter is always busy in Rome, less so in other cities.

As far as Rome goes, it wouldn't hurt to check availability at the Borghese now. Each two-hour time slot is limited. (And keep in mind it'll be closed on the 5,6&7th this year for Easter.)

Especially compared to the Colosseum, which includes the vast areas of the 'Forum' and Palatine Hill as well, so 'appointment times' aren't needed.

At the Vatican, we just chose the rainiest afternoon to spend the time inside. We would have been disappointed if all of the upcoming time slots were filled, but as it turned out, the line for same-day purchase was shorter than the line for redeeming your reservation. We got lucky, but the truly horrible weather that day made us feel worthy of some consolation.

P.S. - this horrible, 2 inches of rain each day, weather was in the second week of April...
