My adult daughter and I would like to travel from Taormina to Pompeii on Aug 6 on an overnight train with a sleeper. We would like to spend a few hours in Pompeii, then continue to Rome where we are staying for 3 nights. We would like to travel to Florence on August 10, stay one night, and travel to Venice on August 11. We are departing Venice airport on August 12. I understand that this is a busy time of year. Any advice on securing tickets -- especially for a good price -- would be appreciated.
I would suggest considering a night train from Taormina to Naples and then taking the private Circumvesuviana train system to Pompeii early the next morning. Trenitalia does have a stop in Pompeii but it's not that close to the scenic ruins. Besides, you will need to change trains in either Salerno or Naples.
There is a night train with no train changes from Taormina to Naples. CLICK HERE to see a typical schedule. Note the 22:50 train (1938 Bellini). No train changes. Also note that you want the train to stop at "NA C.LE" or Naples Centrale. Some runs stop at other stops in Naples and not Centrale. The Circumvesuviana train is down on a lower platform at the Naples Centrale train station.
If you already have your dates, purchase your tickets here before you go. Use a travel agent or book directly on Eurorail. It will save you a headache in case the trains are booked.
