Ticketless Trenitalia purchased in USA

I'm considering purchasing a ticketless "ticket" on Trenitalia at home here in the USA, because I can buy it at a Super Economy fare 5 months in advance. Has anyone done this? I saw one other thread on this Forum where there appeared to be some controversy over whether this could be done, but no one posted that they had done it and whether it worked well or not.
If anyone has done this, please advise.
Thank you.

Not sure exactly what "ticketless" means- but we did buy ours online well in advance and got a print out at home. It had a PNR code- and I think a scanner thing... We just showed to conductor when he came by! Easy!

Tickets go on sale up to 120 days prior to travel. I buy these tickets all the time. Trenitalia emails the ticket to you within seconds, print it out and show it to the conductor when she/he comes by.

ksb,

If you buy the ticket "at home here in the USA", you'll likely pay more than buying it from Trenitalia or Capitaine Train. As I mentioned in your other Thread, the Capitaine Train website is very easy to use.

Your question was well answered by Ken earlier. Just go back and re read it slowly so that you understand the answer.

I bought one of these a couple months ago for our trip in June. You provide the ticket number to the conductor when you board. You can show the number from a print-out (of the email Trenitalia sends you) or from your smartphone. I'm pretty certain these "ticketless" tickets are for in-country excursions only. No other validation is required. Your ticket provides information about the car and seat you purchased.

I also took advantage of the Super Economy fare online. We needed to book the Frecciarossa to Salerno from Rome a few weeks ago. I bought them on the first day they became available which was 4 or 5 months in advance. I was sent an email confirmation with the number that you need to present to the conductor. I had all the information printed out and handed it to him as he came around. There wasn't a problem either way on the Frecciarossa.

I read you to mean that you are sitting at home in the USA and booking a "Ticketless" ticket at www.trenitalia.com for a train entirely within Italy. By most accounts, it works just as advertised and has for years. Issues that I've heard of have been obvious right up front, such as difficulty in getting credit card approval or "not receiving" the confirmation email (but do check in your Spam or Promotions email folder). If there is a problem, then trouble-shooting it through Italian contacts is the hard part.

Yes, Laura, that is exactly correct. Thank you for that information. And thank you to the others who posted their own experience purchasing tickets this way and using them.
