ticketless purchases for Trenitalia

What's the opinion on the ticketless purchasing? Does it work pretty seamless? You purchase it online thru Trenitalia, they send you an em w/purcahse info and you give the perso on the trian the PNR # when you board the train w/out a ticket? Is that how it works?

Short answer, yes. I have an email with a PNR I will be using in two months. :-)

Used "ticketless" tickets several times durring our trip last month and didn't have a single problem. Just show the conductor your email confirmation and you're set. Pretty easy. My understanding is you can either A) print up your email and show it to the conductor; B) call up your email confirmation on your iPhone/portable web device and show that to the conductor; or just C) memorize your code and tell it to the conductor (if you trust your memory).

Bob's answer is right on the mark. Most folks just print out the email with the PNR code and carry it on board with them. This article about using a PNR code may help you understand the practice - and the rules - better: Going "Ticketless" and Using PNR Codes on Trenitalia - Good Luck!

Shari, I just got back and used the ticketless system. I printed out my email confirmation and showed the conductor - no problem. As a backup, I also saved the train number and PNR on the calendar on my phone so I would know exactly where to find it if my papers were lost.

Very easy to use and I preffered it, as you didn't have to deal with the hassle of the kiosks at the train station, though they were not all that difficult either. But just print out your email, with your PNR# and that is your ticket. I would suggest either printed two copies and saving them in different places or do what others have suggested with saving the PNR# in your phone or something else. That is your ticket, if you lose it, then you face a big fine. They check regularly on the trains also.
