Ticket cost to Venice from Milan and flight

We are flying into Milan in August. Our airline would provide a free car to take us to the train station where we will climb a train to Venice. It WOULD be nice to be able to schedule the car but maybe that's too dangerous to time! I'm more worried about the ticket cost to Venice if we don't buy in advance. Is that an Issue? Thanks. Karen

I'm not sure that there's any need for this. There's a very convenient train station right in the Milan airport. Just walk down to it, catch the comfortable, inexpensive train to Milan central train station (trains run frequently), then get the next train to Venice. When I flew into Milan, that's what I did. I don't think I would bother with a car, free or otherwise.

Your flight is to Milan Malpensa (MXP) - right? What airline is providing a car to the train station (and why)?

You can check the Fare at www.trenitalia.com. You will want to take the fast, high-speed train, the * Frecciarossa.* It is best to buy the tickets at the station. If you buy in advance and your flight is late, you run the risk of having the tickets go to waste.

You are looking at 30 to 40 euros max per person for a one way ticket in 2nd class if you buy on the day of .

In May we bought tickets at the airport for the Milan airport to Milano Centrale for 13 euros for each person.

The day before we went to Venice, we purchased tickets from Milano Centrale to Venezia S. Lucia for 39 euros for each person. That was on Trenitalia, 2nd class.

I would much prefer the train from Malpensa airport to Milano Centrale - I don't see how a car will be much faster (could get stuck in traffic, like our bus did years ago). I just wouldn't see much point in taking the car.

FYI, it is possible to get from Milano Centrale to Venice by regional train. It may take a little longer and require a change (Verona I think, probably a tight connection), but the upside is regional tickets cost the same at the last minute and those trains can't sell out. The fast trains may be even cheaper than the regional trains if you book way in advance but would cost a lot more at the last minute.

What?? There's a train? We took a bus from Milan airport to the Milano Central train station. It was inexpensive.

Bus train either way works. The airline is just try to make money selling a car service when it is not really necessary whether you know or don't know all options

The advantage of the train from MXP to Milano Centrale is that it won't get stuck in traffic. Our first trip (before there was a train to Centrale) we took the bus and it was ridiculous in rush hour traffic! The train to the train is best.

Thanks for the suggestions! I hadn't thought about traffic in a car.

Anyone have tips about money? I'm sure I'll find some info in Rick's book!
