Three nights in Tuscany: where to stay?

Okay, so the honeymoon trip is coming together! We'll be picking up a rental car in La Spezia after 2 nights in CT, then spending 3 nights in Tuscany (aside from 2 nights in Florence right at the beginning of our trip), then driving onto Salerno, where we'll catch a bus to the Amalfi Coast. The big question now is where to stay for our three nights in Tuscany? I thought about picking one town as a home base, but we do want to see Siena and Montepulciano for sure, and probably hit a couple of other hill towns as a day trip. We're tentatively considering a first night in San Gimignano (I hear it's beautiful at night, once the day crowds clear out), second night in Siena, and the final night in Montepulciano. Another consideration for splitting up the nights is that if we visit wineries in Montepulciano, we wouldn't have to worry about the drive back to a different home base. Montepulciano is also a quicker drive (slightly) to Salerno (4 hours-ish). Thanks for any feedback!

It's your honeymoon! Pick out an agriturismo with a pool and a restaurant to use as a base and not have to pack and repack every day. You'll need a rental car, though.

Thanks for your feedback. It's a tough decision--the agraturismos certainly do sound charming, but as this is our first trip to Tuscany (and last for awhile, if plans to start a family soon thereafter are realized!)--and as we will have our relaxation time in CT and on the Amalfi Coast, we do want to see a fair share in Tuscany and experience the hill towns, without doing a lot of backtracking. And as I mentioned, I know we will be doing our fair sampling of Tuscan wine. If we were to stay at an agraturismo centrally located for hitting towns of interest, is there one you would recommend? Grazie!

I recommend staying at Agriturismo Marciano. It is located in Siena, just a short distance from the old town. It is out in the countryside and is a winery. They also make olive oil and the vineyards and olive orchards surround the agriturismo. It is very charming and IMO it is the perfect place to honeymoon. No pool, but it sounds like your plans are to explore anyway. We stayed there 4 nights. One day we drove North to Volterra and San Gimignano, another day we drove South to an abbey, Pienza and Montepulciano. The 3rd day we spent in Siena. I think you will be happier having a base, rather than uprooting yourself daily. One of the very best things about the place is the optional dinners they offer their guests. There is an additional charge, but it is well worth it. We had the best food of our 3 week trip there. Did I mention it is a winery? A different wine with each course to compliment what they are serving. Dinner isn't until 8:00, so you have all day to explore Tuscany and still make it back in time. Check them out on Trip Advisor.

Abby:
I am chiming in to agree with the others and encourage you to pick a base for your three nights. You are already moving around a lot with 2 nights CT, 2 nights Florence, and all the way to the Amalfi Coast. A 2 night stay is really one day of sightseeing. Don't underestimate how tiring it is to pack, move, unpack. Really, it is. Your 3 nights in Tuscany could be a restful break in the tour, where you establish a base and achieve a sense of place instead of "passing through." I'd suggest Siena for a base, with daytrips one day north, the next day south. You can see San Gimignano on the way from the CT to Siena quite easily. Not an overnight, but maybe a good lunch stop before you get to Siena. We stayed in Siena, not an agriturismo, because we wanted that city-at-night-after-the-daytrippers experience. Only downside is parking, which you may have to pay for. Look at Antica Residenza Cicogna in Siena. Very romantic, close to il Campo, and they do have a parking spot you may be able to reserve for 10 euros per night. Nice people, too! For daytrip inspiration, you might have a look at Slow Travel http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/tuscany/sd_driving_tuscany.htm. This link will take you to one drive option, but on the right there are links to several other ideas under "Tuscany Travel Notes." You really can't go wrong picking a town as a base. Use Google Maps to plot some driving times and options to see what might work best for you.

Abby,
I, too, would agree that a base town is the way to go. In fact, my family leaves in a few weeks for Italy for 3 weeks. One of those weeks will be spent at an agriturismo in Montepulciano (the owner makes his own Vino Nobile!). Day trips to lots of vineyards and wine villages from there, including Montalcino (less than an hour drive, Brunello!). Siena is within striking distance, also, so you can fill your city fix, if you desire. Realize that after your spend some time in Italy, you'll not want to wait too long before you go back... This trip, my wife and I are accompanied by our 9 month old daughter. She's practicing that backward hand wave thing...

I agree with Andrea and also suggest Agriturismo Marciano. I personally would not want to stay in a different place every night. Agriturismo Marciano is charming and perfect for a honeymoon. The optional dinners were the best we had during our entire trip to Italy!! We still talk about those dinners. We did the same thing as Andrea...drove to Volterra & San Gimignano in one day, Siena for one day & Pienza & Montepulciano for one day. My only regret is that we didn't stay at the agriturismo longer. It was a fantastic experience. Check out the reviews on Trip Advisor. Have a great honeymoon.
