I am attending a friend's wedding on Lake Como in April. I have three nights to explore before I need to be at the wedding location. I would like to take a short side trip to see something/somewhere amazing. My flight arrives in Milan. Where should I go? I was thinking Gimmelwald, Switzerland (I've never been to Switzerland) or maybe Florence? I've already been to Venice or that would be my first choice. Thanks for the help! Other ideas of where to go would be great - I'm not stuck on just either Gimmelwald or Florence.
Of the two you mention: Florence.
It's closer, in the same country, and the train trip is easy.
And it's one of the most fascinating cities in the world for history, architecture, art--it's even got shopping and people watching.
I have three nights to explore before I need to be at the wedding location.
So... 3 nights only gives you 2 full days to explore a new destination.
You may like to go to Verona with day trip to Lake Garda or Padua (Padova).
Where is the wedding? Varenna / Bellagio/ Menaggio?
Have a great trip!
Edit: Verona is an easy train ride from Milan (1Hr,22Mins via high speed train)
Florence is always a great choice too!
Bergamo might be an interesting stop, less than an hour from Milano. Small town, beautiful centro storico.
I agree with others above: Florence is a great option. Gimmelwald is hard to get to unfortunately and you'd lose lots of precious sightseeing time just getting there and back. :(
If you're looking for Alpine-esque sights though you might consider the Dolomites. They're best explored by car however. Val Gardena Italy in particular is beautiful. There is a bus service that will take you directly from Milan's airport to Val Gardina. I think its something like 3-4 hours to reach it though.
Thank you everyone! I think I'm going to head to Florence for a couple nights, then back up to Bergamo for a night before heading out to my friend's wedding. I'm getting excited!
