Three family rome trip help (accommodations, area to stay, etc)

Hi. My entire family is planning a trip to Italy this summer. We already have a week in Siena all nailed down (with day trips planned to Florence, Piza, a winery, olive tasting)... That part is pretty nailed down. I am looking for help with the last part of our trip to Rome. We will be leaving the villa on Saturday and heading to Rome until Wednesday. There are three families going. My parents (two adults), my sisters family (two adults, two pre-teenagers), and my family (two adults, two preschoolers). So six adults, two larger kids and two smaller kids. I am trying to decide where to stay. We are not opposed to renting one place for all of us, but it will have to accommodate all of us together. Opinions please! Hotel might be better but I heard its difficult to get a family of four in one room, like here in the US.

Thanks for your help.

Also very happy to hear tips and help for an itinerary.

Try looking for apartments in the area around Piazza Navonna or even Trastevere. Apartment rental through vrbo.com is great in my experience. Airbnb charges a pretty high fee and they feature the same apartments. The pluses: kitchen, multiple bedrooms/bathrooms available, better location than hotels, easier on the wallet. Negatives: honestly in the past 10 years I haven't had but one negative experience and I notice that apartment is no longer listed.

What month are you going and what is your budget for a double and a quad or family room? I see a nice centrally located Starhotel with family rooms (4people per room) available with breakfast in August for about $1,100 for 4 nights. You can look for hotels with family or quad rooms on a site such as booking.com by choosing more options for the number of people.

You could also look at vrbo.com for apartments for 10 to compare availability and prices.

We were in Italy last October/November for 3.5 weeks and rented 4 different airbnb apartments. We find the process so smooth and have not had a bad experience, yet. The year before we stayed in 3 airbnb in Southern Spain. All very good. We usually share with another couple or two. I think the pricing is actually quite reasonable and having a kitchen is wonderful for breakfast and even cooking dinner. We've had some terrific take out Rotisserie chicken . Also, I read every review for each rental. It's very important. In Rome you might choose the Villa Borghese area with it's large wonderful park (great for kids) and fabulous museum. The area near the Piazza Navona is so walkable to all the historical sites. Do go to the Piazza Campo di Fiore with its open air market full of flowers, vegetables, etc. Great pizza there, too! Transportation is not bad in Rome. The area around the Colosseum, Forum, etc. with its sprawl of ruins is wonderful to walk on a Sunday morning with the streets closed. I'm sure you will go to the Pantheon, it can be so crowded but also interesting with some pretty good musicians playing. Last year there was a very cool Jazz group playing . . . what we in California call, West Coast straight ahead jazz. Don't be afraid to take the Hop on Hop off buses. Gelato every day? Why not? Rome is a delight, very friendly and welcoming to kids. Stick with casual Osteria's on the back streets for meals. The pizza is pretty terrific. Have a ball!!

We rented this place two summers ago, they have an apartment next door also. It was a great place, not sure how many you can fit between the two places, but worth a look.... The owners were great and the location was perfect.

They also list the loft in their listing so you can check them both out. If you can get them and fit there, I highly recommend it!!!

Kim hit the nail on the head with the above listed VRBO apartment. We stayed in the smaller of the 2 apartments on our first trip to Rome and first European apartment rental. The apartment was stunning and absolutely perfect as were the young couple who owned it and lived just next door in the larger apartment. Would highly highly recommend this place.

I have an idea. Stay in a villa and train into Rome unless you are dead set on staying in the city.

Try this villa (Santi Terzi, Google it) which is plenty large enough for all of you . The kids will love it. Easy train ride from Narni to Roma Termini. San Gemini is cute little Umbrian town you will enjoy. You can go to Carsulae to see your own Roman ruins (not many visitors) and day trip all over the wine country of Tuscany and the hills of Umbria.
